This story is set in the Modern Age, 2019.

An SUV rides down a highway during midday. The two occupants are travelling, looking for someone.

"Do ve rrreally have to listen to yourrr kountrrry music?", asks Ana with a droll look on her face.

Everett looks at Ana confused, "Are you kidding me? This is the best music on the planet."

"Bozhe moy!" Ana turns and stares out the passenger window, "Arrrrghh !"

"Calm down, Sweetheart. No need to get your per'ya in a ruffle."

"Nice one. You have been studying RRRussian?"

"Da. Malen'kiy," says Everett, rubbing his chin.

The SUV turns into a local diner and parks near the entrance. Everett and Ana exit the vehicle and enter the diner.

They sit opposite each other in a booth. Ana grabs a menu as the waitress walks up, "You folks ready to order?"

Everett looks at her name badge, "Good Afternoon, Patty. What is your special today?"

Patty shifts her weight and points her pen at Everett, "Our lunch special is fried chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a roll."

"Perfect! We'll have that."

"Comin' right up, Sugar!" says Patty as she walks toward the kitchen.

Everett turns to face Ana and crosses his arms on the table, "So, where is this 'experiment' we're looking for?"

"Close. Verrry close." Ana turns to look out the window, "She alone and skarrred."

Ana turns her head a few times, staring blankly into the air.

"Exkuse me. I must use rrrestrrroom." Ana leaves the table for the restroom.

Everett pulls out his phone, dials, and places it to his ear. A few seconds later, he begins speaking, "Joe. Everett. How are things back at base?"

He nods a few times, "Good," he pauses, then speaks again, "Yeah, we found another one. I hope this one is a little less aggressive than the last one."

Another pause and some nodding, "Will do, General. Later."

“Here ya go, Sweetie!” says Patty, as she places the dinners on the table. She tears off a ticket and lays it face down on the table, “If y’all need anything else, just give me a holler.” She walks away from the table.

*********************************************************************************

Ana exits the back door of the diner. She pauses a moment to slowly look around, then begins walking toward her right. When she reaches the street, she turns left, walks about fifty feet and stops in front of an abandoned gas station.

She walks through the door slowly, “Hello? I know you arrre herrre and what vas done to you. I frrriend herrre to help.”

A few seconds later, a sweet voice comes from the back,” Go away! I don’t want to hurt you! I don’t want to hurt anyone!”

Ana creeps through the piles of trash and forgotten relics, “You vill not hurrrt me. I also have been in experrriment. I have safe place forrr you to go.”

“Please stop! Go away! I don’t want to hurt you!” the voice cries, “I can’t control it! It wants to hurt you! Please go!”

Ana turns her head to her left, sensing the danger, “Oh, crrrap.”

Just as the words come from her lips, a little girl, around 11 years old, bursts through the wall, surrounded by a glowing red aura in the form of a demon, or some other hideous monster.

Ana jumps out of the way but receives a three-clawed scratch across her mid-section. She lands on an old desk, surrounded by junk. She goes into camo mode, but the monster girl can still see her and attacks again, leaping and clawing relentlessly. Ana continues to evade and counter with little effect, taking a few hits along the way.

“Why do you avoid the inevitable?” says the monster girl, in a very dark, ethereal voice, “You cannot defeat me! I have lived for thousands of years. I have fought warriors far greater than you and defeated them! I! Am! Forever!”

Ana lies on her side, barely able to hold herself up. Her face is scratched, and her eye and lip are bleeding, “I vas vaiting.”

The monster girl looks confused, “Waiting for what?”

All of a sudden, the monster girl begins to shake violently, with arcs of electrical energy dancing across her body. She then goes limp in the trash, smoking.

“Me!” says Everett, as he holsters his pistol.

“Vat took you so long?” asks Ana as she slowly lifts herself from the rubble and junk.

Ana walks up to Everett. He puts his finger in her face, “Do not ever do that again!” He puts his hand down and calms his face, “I am not going to tell the General about this, but if you ever go out on your own like this again…”

“Spasibo,” Ana says hugging Everett.

*********************************************************************************

“She looks so sveet, doesn’t she?” Ana stands at the glass wall of the cell where the monster girl is being detained. She is asleep.

Everett stands behind her, to one side, “Hard to believe that little girl can become a raging demon.” He puts a hand on Ana’s arm, “Ready to go?”

Ana turns her head slightly toward Everett, “I vill need moment, please. I vill meet you outside.”

“Take your time.” Everett then walks out of the room.

Ana places a hand on the glass and tears begin to roll down her face, “I vill help you, mladshaya sestra. I vill find the bastarrrds who did this to us. I prrromise.”

Ana turns to leave the room, “I prrromise.”

To be continued...
